6 things TO AVOID while in Goa
Keep away from this things while in Goa
Every place has their pros and cons; we can all agree to that! The state of Goa has certain limitations too which must be withheld by every person in the state including its citizens. If you don't follow these instructions, you could end up in a pretty grave mess and even be penalized or imprisoned for it. Hence, keep in mind these key-points and don't cross the line! I repeat, DO NOT CROSS THE LINE!
- Alcohol consumption on the beach is no longer an option! You heard me right - the government of Goa has recently passed a law to prohibit consumption of alcohol openly on the coastline. Failure to abide by the law can attract fines. This law has been put in place because of the garbage menace on the coastal belt due to the unethical behavior of the youth throwing bottles in the water bodies and littering the silver sands of Goa. However, you are allowed to drink in the shacks and restaurants on the coastline, provided you are sitting at their tables and enjoying your moments responsibly.
- Do not Provoke a local person: Now! You might be all ripped and muscular but do not get into a duel with any of the localite. This is because of their unity. A Goan is said to be magnanimous in nature but he/she always stands united with his/her people. There has been previous cases of international tourists taking the law in their own hands, only to be brought to the ground by the Goans. An example of this is an African community stopping traffic on the highway and causing riots with the police just watching everything from a distance. It didn't take long before they got their place showed by a group of teenagers. You might get to witness this at some time or the other during your vacation.
- Do not visit any uncrowded places alone: Let's be honest here. You might have come across the increasing numbers of rapes and molestation cases in the country. Goa is also a victim of these increasing scandals. I have personally witnessed persons stalking and following me on lonely roads - I am a man. People have become incorrigible lately. This is because the central system is corrupt as a whole. You have stringent rules for safety of cows but nothing done regarding the protection of women. Try to avoid wandering on the beach at night (as early as 6:30 - from personal experience) all by yourself. Always have a backup plan in case things go south! Be cautious of your surroundings - you can use it to your advantage. Even a dog barking incesssantly in a particular direction is a warning of an impending danger. Get up and start moving if that happens. The night is young and full of horrors!
- Do not ride a scooter if you're not confident about riding it: Riding a scooter is not that hard, I know! But do you know that everyday Goa witnesses road accidents due to rash driving. It may not be you who' s violent but you can fall prey to these accidents if you do not know how to control your vehicle if such situation arise. The statistics skyrocket during the monsoon and with the abrupt crossing of animals.
- Avoid getting caught by the RTO: We have the most ridiculous prohibition at last. It's so funny and on fleek in so many levels. A person indigenous to Goa considers this to be the most important thing to avoid. It is the Road Tax Officer (RTO). These are the officers in white and blue or a khaki uniform! Hilarious, right? It gets even better. If you got caught by these people - be it without a helmet, official documents such as insurance or pollution papers - you will get penalised by them based on your ethnicity. If they find out you're a tourist, you will remember that day for the rest of your life, my friend. They'll try to ask you every detail and documents to stack up the fees and charge you a bomb. Don't worry though; I've got you covered The best way to avoid them is to take a bloody U-turn and take a detour. Or else, wait at a distance with the rest of the predators till they drive out of your sight.
- Do not fall for any scams: the most targeted tourists are those seeking for hook-ups. This is the most common ploy to loot the tourists. The desperate bunch of individuals ask favours from the taxi drivers to meet local prostitutes. But instead of getting what they asked for, they are told to give cash as an advance and left stranded at the hotel later. Also, most taxi drivers price your fare based on your looks. To circumvent this, ask prices from 2-3 drivers from different corners. If you ask at the same place, you'd probably end up paying them more because of their unison. Be aware of your surroundings.
